Welcome to the Internet based version of the TOEFL test. The TOEFL test is structured into four sections to test your English language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Instructions are provided for each section in this Help Guide as well as before the start of each section of the test.
To properly run the TOEFL IBT, the minimum requirements are:
- Apple Macintosh OS: Yosemite, 10.10
- An Apple desktop or laptop from 2010 onwards able to run OS10.10 or newer
- Windows OS: Windows 7 and up
- Sound capability
- A headset or speakers along with a microphone
- Broadband Internet connection
- HTML5 capable browser: Latest version of Chrome, or Firefox, or Edge (Windows 10)
For the test to run effectively your browser must be allowed to play audio; autoplay must be set to allow. As well, your microphone must also be set to allow.
I. How to set autoplay to allow:
A. For Chrome:
If Sound in your Settings is set to 'Mute sites that play sound', the audio still plays, but you will not hear it. Do the following to hear the audio:
1. In the far left area of the address bar click on the View Site information icon (looks like a small lock).
2. A pop-up layer opens.
3. Go to the Sound option.
4. Change 'Mute' to 'Allow'.
5. To close the pop-up layer, click the X (top right corner), or click anywhere on the web page.
B. For Firefox:
If autoplay is set to block, in the far left area of the address bar you will see an icon that looks like a triangle play button with a line through it. To change autoplay to allow:
1. Click the i in a circle icon at the far left of the address bar.
2. The Control Center opens.
3. Go to the Permissions section.
4. Change Block to Allow for 'Autoplay sound'.
5. The icon that looks like a triangle play button with a line through it should be gone now.
6. Click anywhere on the web page to close the Control Center.
If the above did not work, you can try this method:
1. Click the Menu button (top right of browser window, 3 vertical lines).
2. Choose Options.
3. A new tab/window in the browser will open.
4. Select the 'Privacy & Security' option (listed in area on the far left).
5. Uncheck the box for 'Block websites from automatically playing sound'.
C. For Edge:
Do the following steps to change autoplay to allow:
1. In the far left area of the address bar, click on the View Site information icon (looks like a small lock).
2. A pop-up layer opens.
3. In the Website permissions area, go to the 'Media autoplay' section.
4. In the pulldown below 'Media autoplay', change Block to Allow.
5. If in the Website permissions area you see 'You haven't set any permissions for this site yet', click the link below: 'Manage autoplay settings'. The Media autoplay pulldown will appear. Select 'Allow'. 6. Click anywhere on the web page to close the pop-up layer.
If the above did not work, you can try this method:
1. Click the Settings and more button (top right of browser window, 3 dots).
2. In the layer that opens, choose Settings (near the bottom).
3. Choose Advanced from the list on the far left.
4. In Site settings (at the top), go to the 'Media autoplay' section.
5. In the pulldown below 'Media autoplay', change Block to Allow.
6. Click anywhere on the web page to close the layer.
II. How to Allow Your Microphone:
To be able to do the Speaking section, your microphone (built in or headset), must be active, and must be set to Allow mode.
If you are using a headset: Plug in your headset into your computer. If there is a switch for on/off, or for mute, make sure it is set to on, and/or mute is disabled.
A. For Chrome:
If the microphone is already active for our website:
1. In the far left area of the address bar click on the View Site information icon (looks like a small lock).
2. A pop-up layer opens.
3. Go to the Microphone option.
4. Make sure the pulldown is set to 'Allow'.
5. To close the pop-up layer, click the X (top right corner), or click anywhere on the web page.
When the microphone is not active for our website:
1. In the Speaking section, start the first question.
2. After the audio for the question has played, the screen will show Preparation Time and Response Time with no time values.
3. Chrome will automatically display a pop-up layer from the lock icon seen in the far left part of the address bar.
4. In the layer it asks: 'www.testden.com wants to Use your microphone' Allow | Block. You must select Allow.
5. The pop-up will automatically close, and the Speaking question will continue to run.

NOTE: If you are not asked in Edge to allow our website to have access to your microphone, you may have never allowed Edge to have microphone access. If so, you must go to your computer's Settings, then to the Privacy section, then to Microphone. Find the 'Allow apps to access your microphone'. This has to be ON. Then in the list of applications, you need to set it ON for Edge. You must also restart Edge to see this change.
The TOEFL test always starts with the Reading section.
The Reading section will last from 54 to 72 minutes depending on the number of passages (3-4).
Click on Start or the Reading icon to start the TOEFL test:
You will notice the other 3 sections are greyed out. You cannot jump to any other section and the sections must be completed in order. The next section will not be available until the previous section is completed.
Once you have clicked on Start or Reading Section icon, the Directions page will appear.
Click Continue or the Next button when you are done with the directions in order to read the first passage and see the first question.
The passage to read is always on the right hand side of the page and the question is on the left. The reading passage is displayed for each question.
What question you are on is given in the middle of the screen above where the question and passage are displayed:
Most of the questions are multiple choice with 4 options and worth one point. If another type of question is shown, you are given instructions on how to answer it. If the question is worth more than one point, it will be indicated on your screen.
Click on your choice:

Click on Next in the upper right area of the page to submit your answer and to go on to the next question:
Note: You can skip questions and go back to do them later if there is time remaining.
You are allowed to go back to a question you have already answered. You can use the Back button in the upper right area of the page to do so:
You can also use the Review button to navigate:
Click on Review and a new window will open showing you the list of questions in the reading section you are in. You will see which ones you have answered and also which ones you have not answered. Click on a Go button to be taken to that question. You cannot jump to a question you have not viewed yet.

At the end of a section, as long as there is time remaining, you can navigate back through the questions to review and possibly change your answers. Click on Return to check your work (you are taken back to the first question of the section), or click on Review to see the list of questions, or click on Continue if you are ready to go to the next section:
There is a clock in the upper right to show how much time you have remaining in a section. You can choose to hide the time.
Click Hide Time:
Click Show Time again to make the clock visible again:
Note: If you run out of time in any section of the TOEFL test, you will automatically be taken to the next section upon clicking OK:
Your headset or speakers are required for this section. You can adjust the volume at any time by using the Volume button:
The Listening section will last from 41 to 57 minutes depending on the number of passages (5 to 7).
You will listen to an academic talk, or a conversation, and then answer 5 (for a conersation) to 6 (for an academic talk) questions based on the passage you just heard.
You will only hear the passage once so it is important to take notes while listening.
Each passage is 3-5 minutes in length. As you listen to the passage, you can see how much is left from the progress bar shown beneath the image for the passage:
What question you are on is given in the middle of the screen in the upper part of the page:

The questions are mostly multiple choice or picking several answers out of 4 to 6 options. Some questions require you to listen again to part of the passage and then answer a question based on the passage.
Once you have selected your answer, click on the Next button:
You need to confirm your answer by clicking on the OK button. You may change your answer as long as you have not clicked on the OK button.
Note: You cannot go back to any question in the Listening section once you have proceeded to the next one.
Again, the clock is there to show you how much time you have remaining and you can hide it if you want.
After the last question in the Listening section, you will see this screen:
You are allowed a 10-minute break before going on to the Speaking and Writing sections. If you do not want a break, click on the Proceed button to continue.
You headset or speakers and microphone are required for this section. Respond to each task as completely as you can, always speaking clearly into the microphone.
There are four tasks which will last for a total time of 20 minutes:
- For task 1, you will speak about a topic that is familiar to you. Your responses will be graded on your ability to speak about the topics clearly.
- For tasks 2 and 3, you will be asked to read a short text. The text will then disappear and you will hear a talk on the same topic. For each task, you will be asked a question about what you have read and heard. You will need to use information from the text and the talk to answer the questions. Your responses will be graded on your ability to speak clearly and accurately about what you have read and heard.
- For task 4, you will hear part of an academic talk. For this task, you will then answer a question about what you have heard. Your responses will be graded on your ability to speak clearly and accurately about what you have heard.
Listen closely to the directions for each task. You will not see the directions on the screen.
You are allowed to take notes while reading and listening, and you are allowed to use your notes to help you respond.
For each task, you will be given a short time to prepare your response. A clock on the screen will show how much preparation time remains:
After the preparation time is finished, you will hear a tone. You will be given a certain amount of time to speak. A clock will show how much speaking time remains. A message will appear on the screen when your speaking time has finished. You then click on the Next button in the upper right part of the page to go onto the next task.
After the last task, you will be asked to click on Next. You will see the End of Speaking Section directions page. When you are ready, click on the Proceed button to be taken to the Writing section.
There are two tasks:
- In the first task, you will have 3 minutes to read a passage. You may take notes if you wish. Then you will listen to an academic talk on the same subject. You should take notes while you listen. You will then hear and read a question that asks about the relationship between the text and the talk. You will have 20 minutes to write your response essay. You may use your notes to help you write your response, and the passage is made available again for you to reference as well. If you finish early, you may click on Next to go on to the second task.
You cannot go back to the first question in the Writing section once you have proceeded to the second one.

Again, the clock is there to show you how much time you have remaining and you can hide it if you want.
- The second task asks you to write an essay in which you state, explain, and support your opinion on an issue. You have 30 minutes to write your essay:
Once you are done writing your essay, click on Next to end the Writing section. You will see the End of Writing Section directions page. Click on Proceed. The TOEFL test is now complete. You are automatically taken to the Score and Review page.
Once you have completed the TOEFL test, the Score and Review pages become available.
Click on the Start icon or the Review/Score icon to enter the Score page:
You will see your score for each section and a link to Review each section.
Note: The Reading and Listening sections are automatically graded. Speaking and Writing scores are not displayed unless your institution has chosen to provide teacher grading.
Click on one of the Review links to see the Review page for that section.
If you selected the Reading review link you will see the entire Reading section with all the questions, if your answer was correct or not, and a link to see the question:
Click on the View link in order to see the question which will include the explanation. The passage and/or audio files are available as well.
From the question you are reviewing, you can go to the next or previous question in that section or you can return to the entire list of questions for a given section by using the buttons in the upper right area of the question review page:
(these are the buttons in the Reading Review section)
In the Listening, Speaking and Writing sections, there is an additional button to click if you want to view the original question audio and/or reading passage. For the audio files, there are transcripts viewable as well:

As you start your preparation for the TOEFL, you may hear and see a lot of acronyms tossed around: iBT, PBT—what does it all mean? TOEFL tests are available in both an electronic version (iBT) and a paper version (PBT). But, even with that explained, you may still be asking, “Should I take the TOEFL iBT or PBT?” As Lucas has mentioned before, this question is usually unimportant, because the PBT and iBT are seldom offered in the same place. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions. Look at the lists below to see if you can choose between the two formats.
Some of the countries and regions that offer both the PBT and iBT
Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo DRC, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Suriname, Tanzania, Togo
If you live in one of the above countries or regions, you may have access to both versions of the test. (Depending on where you live, and how far you’re willing to travel.) However, as mentioned, these may be only some of the countries that offer both versions of the TOEFL. The official TOEFL search engine for iBT test centers isn’t really designed for searches at the national level, and is instead geared toward city and town searches. So even if you don’t see your country above, you may want to look at the official PDF list of TOEFL PBT countries and cities. Then, if your city is on that list, you can log into your TOEFL iBT account, search for test centers, and see if your city or a nearby one also offers iBT.
The difference between the two exams
So if you do have access to both tests, which one should you choose? To answer this question, you need to look at the basic structure of both exam.
As loyal readers know, the TOEFL iBT has four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Reading and Listening are multiple choice. Speaking and Writing require production of language. Because the iBT is completely computer-based, test-takers will read from the screen, listen from their headset, record speech into a microphone, and type written responses on a keyboard.
Toefl Ibt Practice Online
The TOEFL PBT has four sections too. Like the iBT, the PBT has sections for Reading, Listening, and Writing. However, the PBT’s fourth section is “Structure and Written Expression,” not Speaking. The TOEFL PBT Structure and Written Expression section focuses on grammar. The skills tested in this section closely relate to the skills of proofreading, editing, and revising in English writing. However, the section doesn’t have any lengthy writing tasks. Instead, correct grammatical forms and proper revisions are selected by multiple choice. You can see some example questions on the official TOEFL PBT website here.
Which exam to choose
There are few things you should consider when choosing between the PBT and iBT. I’ve outlined those considerations below.
There is also one more thing to consider when choosing between the PBT and iBT. You need to remember that the PBT is outdated. It doesn’t reflect the expectations of modern higher education. The iBT’s emphasis on speech instead of grammar is more in line with the kinds of English you’ll actually have to use once you begin your studies. So the iBT can probably better prepare you for your academic career, even at a school that accepts both versions of the test.
